Surfing Trips

An ingenious application of a trashed yellow plastic jerry can, yes, as a door hinge in one the shacks we stayed in - shot during a trip by Gunnar Sahnun Nimpoeno

  –  the Forgotten Paths of Sumatra  –  Java Surfari  –  Batukaras  –  Pacitan  –  Medewi  –  Outside Indonesia  –
  –  trips for residents of Brunei, Malaysia, Phillipines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam  –  Turtles  –  Surf Hunting  –
  –  learners to expert  –  small to xx-large waves  –  Special Req.  –  families, couples, groups  –  Panaitan  –

inti-forgotten-pathsSome say Indonesia is the great undiscovered surfing heaven of the world. During the 1980’s Sumatra island took the surfing world by storm with its Nias Island breaks while the 90’s saw west Sumatra chain of islands called the Mentawai’s yet again took over every surfing hearts & minds in the known universe.

This is a surfari-style adventure of discoveries, visiting the many unknown breaks as well as popular ones, when conditions are good. This trip may include exploring new surf breaks and is perfect for soul surfers, nature lovers and hardcore travellers.

inti-java-surfariJava Surfari explores the many different uncrowded, less-known and well known surf spots in West Java, Central Java, East Java and its surrounding offshore islands. Java Surfari takes you in a well-supplied 4×4 complete with camping & abseiling equipment, cookery and cutlery, portable shower, and trial-bike motorcycles. You just need to bring your surf gear.

This trip is wonderful for adventure and discovery while being in proximity to the usual modern amenities. This is a full-service all-costs-included trip with flexible schedules featuring continuous surf forecasting to get you to a spot at the right times. This trip is ultra-sweet for wave hunters seeking to find new surf spots.

inti-batukarasWhat more can we ask for if the stoke we’re going to get is in a place with tropical waters, mellow point-break right-hand waves, sandy bottom, good food, relatively uncrowded, cool surf locals and a ‘longboard paradise’? We can ask for faster waves nearby, many breaks in striking distance and a pristine secluded feel! Batukaras is all that and more.

An ideal no-frills easy-access destination for families, friends and beginners to experienced surfers, Batukaras also offers non-surfing activities, adventures and cultural experiences; an all-in-one destination for everyone.

We remind you that Batukaras surf is very fickle and is subject to mega-crowds during Indonesian national holidays. Batukaras is also frequented by surfers from Bandung and Jakarta during the weekends and at times it is a venue for beach parties and surf contests. Ask us for best times and schedules.

inti-pacitanSurfing-wise, near and around the East Java city of Pacitan definitely has everything for everyone and every surfer. Another spot like Batukaras that can satisfy everyone including non-surfers.

Sometimes fickle and always in need of sound local surf spot knowledge as well as great forecasting, Pacitan’s not-so-far-away many breaks still needs some serious drive and driving or motorcycling to get to the spots that are working at the moment; some spots even needs serious hikes. Transportation costs may be the biggest part of your costs.

inti-medewiMedewi is in Bali island, Indonesia. Bali is notoriously known for its mega-tourism and up-front commercialism, not really for the soul-searcher. Although not fully pristine, Medewi is one of those rare places in Bali which feels peaceful and secluded.

On a right schedule backed up with confirmed room bookings and good forecasting, arranging a stint in Medewi through Wayang Ombak is a great stepping-stone for those of you who have their flights land or leave from Denpasar, Bali (airport code DPS).

There is a locals-only vibe in the surf in Medewi. The locals will be cool if you are cool. We advise you to read both of the main surf rules posted in this website. Surf rules 1, surf rules 2. Surf stints in Medewi picks you up from anywhere within Bali, or come on your own. Our main service is to fix for you the accommodation you require. G-Land excursions from Medewi is available.

inti-outside-indonesiaAmong the ‘outside indonesia’ surf trip destinations there’s Morocco, Peru, South Africa, Chile, Namibia, Spain, Maldives and Vanuatu. Just about anywhere we might dream of going, as long as it is not crowded and still ‘real’, you know how we are.

Usually either airports in Malaysia or Singapore is the main starting hub for these trips, thus more suited for surfers and travellers that are residents of ASEAN member countries. Trip ideas and planning usually come from us but if you got ideas, do please share it out! Give us a holler, please.

inti-turtlesNamed after its proximity to a nearby sea turtle protected nesting haven, the ‘Turtles’ surf spot is locally known as Pangumbahan with a number of nearby unnamed breaks. Its greatly untouched natural surroundings alone is already a dream to explore.

Trips to this place is also highly recommended for families, couples, small groups which contain non-surfing members. We believe visiting Turtles can prove to be a powerful and lasting soulful experience for everyone. Click the ‘Turtles info & bookings’ blue button below for more information.

Wave Types & Sizes  -  small, med, large, x-large, xxl, xxl tow-in

Some of us sometimes needs to ride the waves that we envision ourselves in. Some like wallish long rights, some like fat and gigantic lefts, some ‘A’ frame head-high hollow but not ’sucky’ with a dab of racetrack, some glistening hip-high mellow just like Waikiki, some just simple ‘barrelly’. The blue button sends an email.

Special Requirements

Wayang Ombak members and friends have handled custom trips for celebrities, surfing athletes, tow-in xxl wave surfers, and corporate executives, among others. Most special requirement trips want ‘under the radar’ privacy or ultra secluded-uncrowded spots.

inti-surf-huntingWayang Ombak’s Surf Hunting is a fun, cool & relaxed soul surfer explorer’s trip to whatever destination where there are no known surf spots at all! We specifically use part of the trip taking Indonesia’s enigmatic and sometimes problematic PELNI passenger ship lines as part of the fun.

We only go Surf Hunting when most of Indonesia’s indian-ocean-facing breaks are out of steam, backed up with our members’ eye in surf forecasting, Surf Hunting trips goes to places within Indonesia and its adjacent neighbours.
