Some say Indonesia is the great undiscovered surfing heaven of the world. During the 1980’s Sumatra island took the surfing world by storm with its Nias Island breaks while the 90’s saw west Sumatra chain of islands called the Mentawai’s yet again took over every surfing hearts & minds in the known universe.

Surfing-wise, near and around the East Java city of Pacitan definitely has everything for everyone and every surfer. Another spot like Batukaras that can satisfy everyone including non-surfers.

Sometimes fickle and always in need of sound local surf spot knowledge as well as great forecasting, Pacitan’s not-so-far-away many breaks still needs some serious drive and driving or motorcycling to get to the spots that are working at the moment; some spots even needs serious hikes. Medewi is in Bali island, Indonesia. Bali is notoriously known for its mega-tourism and up-front commercialism, not really for the soul-searcher. Although not fully pristine, Medewi is one of those rare places in Bali which feels peaceful and secluded.

On a right schedule backed up with confirmed room bookings and good forecasting, arranging a stint in Medewi through Wayang Ombak is a great stepping-stone for those of you who have their flights land or leave from Denpasar, Bali (airport code DPS).

Among the ‘outside indonesia’ surf trip destinations there’s Morocco, Peru, South Africa, Chile, Namibia, Spain, Maldives and Vanuatu. Just about anywhere we might dream of going, as long as it is not crowded and still ‘real’, you know how we are.

Named after its proximity to a nearby sea turtle protected nesting haven, the ‘Turtles’ surf spot is locally known as Pangumbahan with a number of nearby unnamed breaks. Its greatly untouched natural surroundings alone is already a dream to explore.

Wayang Ombak’s Surf Hunting is a fun, cool & relaxed soul surfer explorer’s trip to whatever destination where there are no known surf spots at all! We specifically use part of the trip taking Indonesia’s enigmatic and sometimes problematic PELNI passenger ship lines as part of the fun.
